Inexpensive table decor

October 28, 2009

CB2’s white porcelain milk carton vase at $6.95 each. Super cute & unique. An unexpected surprise to see a porcelain milk carton instead of the usual paper one. Adds a bit of humor to the simple things in life. Fun gift idea. Preferably kept out of reach of little ones although if it does break for whatever reason, it’s quite inexpensive to replace.

Anthropologie might not make it to number 1 on your list of places to find inexpensive table decor, but it is always nice to be surprised. This adorable country-looking vase is fun way to add color bring color to you home. And, only for $18. Not bad.

Metal Delco fan from the 1940s… in great working condition. I can’t wait ’til it gets here! Purchased from jennifergoode on Etsy. I am not big on ceiling fans… unless they’re the ones where the blades are shaped like large tropical leaves & it’s outside in a covered patio area (i.e. an outdoor restaurant eating area) with pulled back curtains, candles & cozy furniture. Yes, in that setting, I do like ceiling fans. Inside homes though I prefer the older table fan or floor fan look like these… Here are some other antique fans I found for sale on Etsy (prices range from $15 to $58) while I was searching for my own new beauty:

Book, books & more books

October 27, 2009

I love decorating with books. Potterybarn was my original inspiration for the books then I began to realize that almost every decor book, magazine has a book somewhere in a room! Now I’m in love… or obsessed – not sure which.

(3rd photo from Pottery Barn)

Check out these quotes: “A room without books is like a boy without a soul” – Cicero. Also: “[There is] no furniture so charming as books, even if you never open them, or read a single word” – Sydney Smith, in A Memoir of the Reverend Sydney Smith by Lady Holland, 1855. Don’t they just word it so perfectly? Books make a room so cozy, warm, lived-in, so lovely.

Fabulous Headboards

October 27, 2009

I’m so in love with these headboards… wonderful creation by Vintage Renewal an Etsy seller.

Headboard prices range from $450 to $600 (with shipping included). I’m such a sucker for free shipping. Vintage Renewal also has some must-haves chairs too you gotta check out. The busy fabric patterns in these headboards would go nicely with simple white bedding (like the photo below). With the white bringing good, needed balance to all the color in the headboards. The solid colored bedskirt in the photo is also another great way to add an additional color that you want to emphasis & have stand out in the room… in this case it’s the aqua-blue, turquoise color repeated again in the lamp – so fun & unexpected. I think my eye (like everyone’s eye) loves color surprises. The room in the photo below whispers: balance, clean, simple, clutter-free, happy & livable.

Found these photos in a craigslist ad trying to sell the long rectangular table… just LOVE the combo of old mixed with new AND love all the lighting in this room. Had to save the pic & share. Kinda look you’d find in one of my favorite books: “Old & New” by Katherine Sorrell… just fabulous. This book is a MUST HAVE for gurus like us.
